When Danish broadcaster TV 2 gave up its national FM radio channel in 2008, the frequency that came free became one of the most fought-over slices of airtime in the country. The station that eventually won it, and then conquered it, is Nova. Today it is, by Bauer Media's own account, the most successful commercial radio station in Denmark, reaching over a million listeners every week. Its promise is simple, summed up in its slogan: Nova is the sound of today.

Born on Denmark's Fifth FM Channel

Nova began broadcasting on 8 September 2008, after SBS Broadcasting acquired the rights to Denmark's fifth national FM channel once TV 2 sold off its radio operation. TV 2 retained a 20% stake at first and produced the news until 2014, when Berlingske Media took over. The big shift came in April 2015, when Bauer Media Denmark, part of Germany's Bauer Media Group, took over the station from SBS Radio.

It has held that ground ever since. In 2022 Bauer won the FM5 licence renewal for a further eight years, through to 2030, on a channel that covers most of the country. Nova is now the flagship brand of Bauer Media Audio in Denmark, sitting alongside sister stations like The Voice, Pop FM and Radio 100.

The Sound of Today

Nova's format is mainstream pop, aimed at a broad, youthful-leaning audience.

  • Current chart pop, the freshest hits, the core of a station whose entire identity is being right now rather than nostalgic.
  • Crossover and dance, the upbeat, radio-friendly material that keeps the energy high through the day.
  • Genre detours, a willingness, as the station puts it, to venture into other genres once a track is familiar enough to its listeners.
  • A flagship morning show, GO NOVA, the personality-driven wake-up programme that anchors the schedule.

That morning show is no afterthought: GO NOVA has won Denmark's Golden Microphone award six times, a real mark of quality in Danish radio.

Why Nova Dominates Danish Commercial Radio

Denmark has a strong public broadcaster in DR, which makes the commercial sector genuinely competitive, and Nova's sustained lead says something about how well it reads its audience. By staying relentlessly current, investing in a standout morning show and riding the reach of a near-national FM channel, it has spent more than a decade as the country's top commercial pop station. The backing of Bauer Media Audio, Europe's largest commercial radio operator, gives it the resources to keep that edge, while sister brands cover the listeners Nova's pop focus does not.

Modern Radio, Modern Delivery

Nova fits naturally into the way people listen now. It is carried on FM and DAB and through Bauer's digital platform, with the station broadcasting from the Copenhagen area as the self-styled "sound of today". Bauer has also pushed an ad-free premium streaming tier across its Danish brands, a sign of a broadcaster experimenting with how commercial radio survives and thrives in the streaming age.

Why It's Worth Your Time

If you want to know what Denmark is actually listening to right now, Nova is the obvious dial. The playlist is current, bright and upbeat, the morning show is award-winning, and the whole package is polished in the way only a market-leading station can be. For pop fans and for anyone curious about contemporary Scandinavian radio, it is an easy, energetic listen. Press play and tune into the sound of today, Danish style.
