A Genre Born on a California Dance Floor

Surf rock traces back to Southern California's beach culture in the late 1950s, and one name dominates its origin story more than any other. Dick Dale, born Richard Monsour, moved to Southern California as a teenager and took up surfing before building a sound around rapid picking and heavy reverb, according to Wikipedia's entry on surf music. His 1961 residency with the Del-Tones at the Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa is widely credited as the moment the genre took shape, selling out shows built entirely around his guitar instrumentals.

From "Let's Go Trippin'" to a Signature Sound

Dale's "Let's Go Trippin'," released in 1961, is generally considered the first recorded surf rock instrumental, and his 1962 version of "Misirlou" became the song most associated with him. His playing style, drawing on Middle Eastern tonalities and the percussive attack he pushed through Fender amplifiers, gave the genre its instantly recognizable texture, a sound later acts across the UK and Europe kept alive long after the California beach boom faded.

A UK Home for a California Sound

That sound found a lasting home across the Atlantic. The DripFeed network that carries Monstromental also runs the Official Surf Charts, a weekly tally that tracks the genre's current releases, a sign that surf rock's UK fanbase treats new instrumental bands with the same seriousness vintage Dick Dale records get. Monstromental's spot on that network puts it inside a small but committed scene still producing new surf music decades after the genre's California peak.
