A frequency that changed identity nearly every decade
The 100.3 FM signal behind Mix 100 has one of the more restless histories in Denver radio. It signed on July 9, 1959 as KLIR-FM, simulcasting its AM sister station before settling into beautiful music, according to the station's documented broadcast history. It became adult contemporary outlet KMJI, "Majic 100," in 1984, cycled through a soft AC run as "K-Lite 100" in 1989, flipped briefly to all-70s hits in 1994, and only picked up its current KIMN call letters in April 1995, more than three decades after another Denver station had made that call sign famous as the Top 40 powerhouse "95 Fabulous KIMN."
Finding Mix 100 and keeping it
The station settled into hot adult contemporary and the Mix 100 name in 1999, the same year Chancellor Media, a forerunner of iHeartMedia, acquired it. Infinity Broadcasting bought the station the following year, and ownership passed through CBS Radio and Wilks Broadcasting over the following decade. Mix 100 briefly rebranded as "Mix 100.3" and chased a Top 40 format starting in 2014, before Kroenke Sports Enterprises closed a $54 million deal for the Denver cluster at the end of 2015 and brought the station back to its Mix 100 identity and hot AC format in 2016, a branding it has held onto since.
Thirty-two years with one voice
Few details capture Mix 100's stability like the tenure of Dom Testa, who spent 32 years as a DJ on the station before moving to sister station KOOL 105.1 in 2024, a run that spans nearly the entire Mix 100 era and most of its earlier format detours. That kind of longevity is unusual for a frequency that changed its call sign, name, and format repeatedly before landing on the identity it has now.
