Jakarta's Mandarin-Language Radio and the Story of Cakrawala

Listen Now

Mandarin Station 98.3 FM is a Jakarta radio station playing Mandarin-language pop alongside English, Korean and Indonesian songs, billing itself as the first Mandarin station in the Indonesian capital. It broadcasts on 98.3 FM from West Jakarta, and you can hear it live on Radio Shuffle for free, wherever you are.

What Mandarin Station Plays

According to the listing on Streema, the station mixes Mandarin, English, Korean and Indonesian music. The Jakarta Post's profile of the station describes a day split by audience: classic Mandarin songs in the morning for older listeners, contemporary pop later in the day for younger ones, with announcers, mostly Chinese-Indonesian, moving between Mandarin and Indonesian on air. The station's own site at mandarinstation983.com calls it the first Mandarin station in Jakarta and lists its studio address on Jalan Hayam Wuruk in West Jakarta.

From Radio Cakrawala to Mandarin Station

Before the rebrand, the frequency belonged to Radio Cakrawala, which the Jakarta Post says was established in 1971 in Glodok, the city's Chinatown. Directory sites such as Radio Indonesia still list the former name Cakrawala FM. The new name reflects a very different era from the one in which the station began.

Smuggling Songs Under the New Order

Under Indonesia's New Order government, anti-Chinese sentiment was strong and Mandarin content faced severe restrictions. The Jakarta Post reports that Cakrawala took a daring route: it slipped songs by Taiwanese star Teresa Teng and other Mandarin singers in between Indonesian tracks, and it also aired Mandarin songs translated into Indonesian, at a time when Chinese-Indonesians had to be careful about listening to their favourite music. Once President Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid lifted the anti-Chinese rules, the article quotes the station's spokeswoman as saying the tap was turned on, and the station could rebrand as Mandarin Station and play Mandarin hits openly.

A New Generation of Listeners

The station has since worked to reach younger audiences, including an online audition contest called The Voice of Mandarin Station, held around Chinese New Year, and lifestyle programming with tips on work, relationships and places to go. That blend of nostalgia for older listeners and pop for younger ones keeps a language and a musical tradition alive in a city where it was once pushed to the margins.
