The Portuguese Station That Outlived Its Own Spanish Parent

Listen Now

M80 Rádio plays 80s pop and romantic hits from Lisbon, but the brand name carries a strange twist, the original M80 does not exist anymore. The Spanish station that gave this format its name shut down years ago, leaving the Portuguese version as the only place left where the M80 name still means anything on the air.

Born From a Merger of Rivals

M80's roots trace to Radio 80, which launched across a 19-station Spanish network on July 6, 1981. Antena 3 Radio bought it in 1984, and when the PRISA media group absorbed Antena 3's radio business in the early 1990s, it found itself owning two nearly identical oldies formats, Radio 80 Serie Oro and Cadena Minuto. PRISA merged the two in January 1993, creating what became M80 the following year.

Crossing the Border in 2007

M80 expanded into Portugal in 2007 as a standalone project built specifically for the Portuguese market rather than a simple simulcast of the Spanish feed, adapting the 70s-through-2000s oldies format to local tastes and Portuguese-language programming from the start.

The Spanish Original Went Off the Air

That local adaptation turned out to matter enormously. PRISA shut down the original Spanish M80 Radio on November 21, 2018, after 25 years on air, replacing it with a new brand called Los 40 Classic. The station that gave M80 its name and format effectively disappeared from Spanish radio entirely, while the Portuguese branch, run independently enough to survive its parent's closure, kept broadcasting without interruption.

A New Owner, Same Portuguese Survival

Ownership shifted again in February 2022, when Portugal's Media Capital Group sold its radio stations, M80 included, to Bauer Media Group in a deal worth roughly 70 million euros. M80 Rádio is now one of Bauer Media Audio Portugal's flagship brands, sitting alongside sister stations Rádio Comercial, Cidade FM, and Smooth FM in the company's Portuguese portfolio.

A Brand That Only Survives in One Country

What began as a Spanish oldies format now exists exclusively in the country it expanded into as an afterthought. M80 Rádio's Lisbon stream carries a name with no active counterpart back where it was invented, a rare case of a radio brand's foreign outpost becoming the only version left standing.
