A Spanish chart show, now heard across San José
LOS40 began in 1966 as a weekly Top 40 countdown show on Madrid's Radio Madrid, now Cadena SER, before spinning off into its own independent station in 1979 and eventually expanding across Latin America under Spain's PRISA media group. The network tailors its playlist by region, leaning harder into reggaeton and bachata in markets like Costa Rica and Chile than it does on its home Spanish airwaves. The Costa Rican signal runs on 104.3 FM, grouped in local listening apps alongside San José stations Radio Columbia (98.7 FM) and Radio Monumental (93.5 FM), pointing to a shared local broadcasting operation carrying the licensed format into the capital's crowded FM dial.
A pop import on a dial with deep roots
San José's airwaves have a long memory. Radio Reloj, one of the capital's oldest surviving stations, launched in 1945 as Radio Cristal before rebranding in 1958 to focus on news and community announcements, and stations like Radio Monumental and the public broadcaster Radio Nacional de Costa Rica have anchored the city's dial for decades since. LOS40 Costa Rica's youth-pop format is a far newer addition to that lineup, importing a six-decade-old Spanish brand into a market with its own, much older broadcasting history.
