The Station Born From a Free Newspaper That Gave Luxembourg Its First French-Language Frequency

Listen Now

Before it was a radio station, L'Essentiel was a newspaper, and a free one at that. Launched in 2007 as a free French-language daily distributed across Luxembourg and the wider Greater Region, L'essentiel.lu grew into Luxembourg's top-ranked news website before its publisher decided the brand deserved a second life on the airwaves.

Winning a Frequency That Had Never Existed Before

Luxembourg's radio dial had long been dominated by Luxembourgish and German-language stations, leaving the Grand Duchy's large French-speaking population and its army of cross-border commuters from France and Belgium without a dedicated FM home. That changed when Radiolux, backed by Edita SA and shareholders of Must FM, won the country's first-ever French-language radio frequency, 107.7 MHz, through a government call for bids. Edita, the Differdange-based publisher behind the L'essentiel newspaper and a subsidiary of Luxembourg's Editpress and Switzerland's Tamedia, built the station directly on top of that existing media brand rather than starting from zero.

Hits and News, Nonstop

L'Essentiel Radio went live on February 22, 2016, with programming direction handed to Julien Pinon and a notable on-air return for Jean-Luc Bertrand, a regional television host with more than three decades on screen who joined the project after his previous show ended. The station built its identity around a simple motto, "Hits and news non-stop," pairing a Top 40 pop playlist with the traffic and news updates that matter most to an audience built largely of commuters crossing borders every day.

A Decade of Growth in a Small, Crowded Market

According to the Luxembourg media archive INA, the station's audience has grown steadily since that 2016 launch, a notable result in a small country where French, German and Luxembourgish-language broadcasters compete for the same limited pool of listeners. The station proved there was real appetite for a dedicated French-language FM option, one built around the same day-to-day usefulness, quick news, reliable traffic, hit after hit, that made its newspaper namesake the top French-language news source in the country.
