A frequency that has carried three decades of signal
The station's roots go back further than its current branding. Its AM sister, XEPP-AM, began broadcasting on 1450 kHz before later moving to 1190 kHz, and the FM signal, XHPP-FM, was added in 1994, broadcasting at 10 kW from a transmitter on Cerro de Borrego in nearby Ixtaczoquitlán, according to records of the station's broadcast history. Grupo ACIR managed the frequency for years before handing operations to Grupo Radio Digital, which went on to acquire the station outright in 2016; the AM signal itself was finally switched off on 12 April 2023, leaving FM as the station's sole broadcast.
La Comadre: one format, dozens of Mexican cities
La Comadre is not unique to Orizaba. Grupo ACIR built it into a national regional Mexican and grupera format, making it the flagship sound of its Mexico City station XEL-AM after a July 2015 reorganization, and rolling the same branding out to stations in Puebla, Pachuca, Celaya, Culiacán and Hermosillo. Orizaba's XHPP-FM carries that same La Comadre identity under local ownership, playing the mix of cumbia, banda and norteño hits that define grupera radio for listeners across the surrounding Córdoba-Orizaba metro area, in the shadow of Pico de Orizaba, Mexico's tallest peak.
