Named after a station that no longer exists
Kiss FM Berlin borrowed its name and identity from New York's 98.7 Kiss FM, which launched in 1981 as WRKS before program director Barry Mayo made it the first American station to give hip-hop real prime-time airplay, a run that included DJ Red Alert's influential weekend show and drive-time staples like Run-D.M.C.'s "It's Like That." That original Kiss FM switched to classic soul and R&B in 1994 and eventually went off the air entirely in 2012, when owner Emmis Communications leased its frequency to ESPN and folded the brand into rival WBLS. Berlin's Kiss FM, named after that American original, keeps the old-school hip-hop and R&B sound alive on its Classics channel even though the station that inspired its name no longer broadcasts at all.
A dedicated throwback among Kiss FM's many streams
Classics sits alongside other themed digital channels in Kiss FM Berlin's lineup, running 90s and 2000s hip-hop and R&B nonstop as the station's self-described home of old-school vibes, separate from the main FM signal's current Deutschrap and dance-leaning format.
