Founded by a Superintendent Who Wanted Something New
KEOM signed on September 4, 1984, founded by then Mesquite ISD Superintendent Dr. Ralph Poteet, making Mesquite the first school district in Texas to operate its own radio station, according to reporting from the Dallas Morning News. The station launched at 88.3 FM with a modest 3,000 watts before a 1992 upgrade moved it to 88.5 FM and boosted its signal twentyfold to 61,000 watts, turning a school project into a real regional presence on the Dallas-Fort Worth dial.
Run Entirely by Teenagers
What sets KEOM apart from almost every other station at that wattage is who runs it day to day. The air staff is made up of students from Mesquite's five high schools who compete for one of 56 openings in the Advanced Journalism class, a hands-on broadcast training program where students script, produce and host live programming rather than simply observing professionals at work. On average, at least half of those students go on to pursue a higher education degree in broadcast media, a track record that has held steady for more than four decades.
A Classroom That Sounds Like a Real Radio Station
KEOM plays its classic hits format alongside local news, high school sports broadcasts, traffic and weather, exactly the kind of full-service programming a commercial station would run, with the added detail that teenagers are producing all of it. The district now also runs a Career and Technical Education program in Digital Audio Technology built around the station, extending the hands-on model into formal coursework for students aiming at a broadcasting career.
