The backbone of that news programming is Press Play with Madeleine Brand, which debuted January 27, 2014 as KCRW's first new daily program since To the Point launched back in 2001, according to Current's coverage of the show's launch. Brand moved to KCRW in 2013 after departing KPCC, where her previous show had been restructured into a two-host format, and Press Play built an hour of national, international and local news filtered specifically through a Southern California perspective, running in direct competition with KPCC's AirTalk.

KCRW itself began in 1945 as a Santa Monica College project, originally intended to train students in broadcasting rather than to run a full public news operation. The station became a charter NPR member in 1970, making Santa Monica College just the second community college in the country to own a public radio or television station, a foundation that eventually grew into the kind of newsroom capable of running its own 24-hour news stream.
