What made the switch unusual wasn't the genre change itself but what the station chose to keep: the existing on-air staff stayed in place, and the "Kat" branding carried over intact, a move Wikipedia's history notes is a rarity in an industry where format flips almost always come with entirely new voices and names. Rather than starting over, Kat 103.7 built its new country identity on top of the trust its hosts had already spent years earning with Omaha listeners.
Kat Country, Three Decades Later
That continuity has stuck. Kat 103.7 now runs under the tagline "Omaha's Kat Country," part of the iHeartMedia network, with studios in Midtown Omaha and a lineup that includes Steve and Gina on mornings, Hoss Michaels through the day, and Granger Smith hosting "After MidNite," according to the station's own lineup listed on thekat.iheart.com. The station backs its on-air programming with community-facing features like its "Rate Em Roadhouse" song segment and regular coverage of local concerts and fairs around the Omaha-Council Bluffs area.
A Format That Chose Its Own Timing
Most stations drift into a format change gradually, testing new songs for months before committing. Kat 103.7's switch happened in a single midnight moment, a clean break from rock built specifically to preserve everything the station had already built with its audience. More than thirty years later, that decision to flip the music but keep the people is still the reason Kat 103.7 sounds like it does.
