From Coffee Money to a Technology Hub
Campinas built its modern identity on a deliberate pivot. After the regional coffee economy declined, the city set out to reinvent itself as an interior technology center, a shift that took real shape between 1965 and 1985 under the leadership of Zeferino Vaz, the first rector of the University of Campinas, known as Unicamp. The university's Physics Institute went on to launch Brazil's first laser research program, and the affiliated CPqD research center developed telecommunications products that fed directly into the region's growing tech sector. Today the city hosts roughly twenty research and development centers and four technology parks, and companies including iFood, QuintoAndar and CI&T all trace their origins there.
A National Pop Format for an Engineering City
Jovem Pan's own history traces to Rádio Panamericana, founded in São Paulo in 1942 and renamed Jovem Pan in 1965, with the Jovem Pan Sat satellite network linking affiliates nationwide since 1994, including this Campinas station. A chart-driven pop and rock format gives the city's large student and tech-worker population, drawn largely from Unicamp and the companies that grew up around it, a familiar national soundtrack layered on top of a local economy built on research rather than agriculture.
Pop Radio for the Interior's Innovation Capital
For a city that reinvented itself once already, Jovem Pan Campinas offers a straightforward constant: the same pop and rock hits heard on Jovem Pan affiliates across Brazil, broadcasting from a city now better known for research parks than coffee plantations.
