Built to Replace a Gold-Mining Capital
Belo Horizonte was planned from scratch at the end of the 19th century specifically to replace Ouro Preto as the seat of Minas Gerais's state government, instituted as Cidade de Minas Gerais in 1897 under a design credited to engineer Aarão Reis before taking its current name in 1901. It is often called Brazil's first modern planned city, though that claim comes with an asterisk, since Teresina was laid out on a grid in 1852 and Aracaju followed in 1855. The original plan was sized for around 200,000 residents; the metropolitan area now holds more than ten times that figure, with much of the surrounding growth spilling well past what the 1897 design ever accounted for.
A National Pop Format in a City Built on Design
Jovem Pan's roots trace to Rádio Panamericana, founded in São Paulo in 1942 and renamed Jovem Pan in 1965, with the Jovem Pan Sat satellite network connecting affiliates nationwide since 1994, including this Belo Horizonte station. Landing a national pop and rock format in a city defined by its planned boulevards and geometric street grid gives Jovem Pan Belo Horizonte a direct line into one of Brazil's most economically important state capitals, a city that grew far beyond the orderly blueprint it was built from.
Pop Radio for Minas Gerais's Economic Engine
Today Belo Horizonte anchors the economy of Minas Gerais, and a chart-driven station broadcasting from its center reaches a metropolitan population built on exactly the kind of growth its original planners never fully anticipated, carrying the same national hits heard on Jovem Pan affiliates across the rest of Brazil.
