One of Flanders' first national commercial stations
Joe FM did not start under that name. According to Wikipedia's history of the station, it launched in October 2001 as 4fm, and alongside Q-music it became one of the first two commercial radio stations ever licensed as national broadcasters in Belgium's Flemish Community. That early license put 4fm at the ground floor of Flemish commercial radio, years before the format or the name settled into what listeners hear today.
A rebrand that stuck
Ownership shifted in the years that followed, passing through Talpa Media before landing with the company now known as DPG Media, then still operating as the Vlaamse Media Maatschappij. The station's hosts announced on 19 February 2009 that 4fm would relaunch under a new identity, and Joe FM went on air under that name on 1 April 2009. The format settled into oldies and adult contemporary, a clear shift from whatever 4fm had run under its original branding.
Part of a bigger Flemish radio family
Joe FM now sits alongside Qmusic and Willy as sister stations under the same DPG Media ownership, giving the group coverage across several distinct formats within Flanders rather than competing against itself with near-identical stations. Reported market share figures for Joe FM have landed in the 11 to 12 percent range on different measurement editions, a solid share in a media market where DPG Media runs multiple stations simultaneously.
