An All-Reggae Format Nobody Thought Would Work
Irie FM began test transmissions in July 1990 and officially signed on August 1, 1990, becoming Jamaica's first dedicated reggae station, according to coverage marking the station's 30th anniversary. Critics at the time insisted a 24-hour reggae-only format simply could not sustain itself, a reasonable doubt in a market where existing broadcasters RJR and JBC had largely sidelined reggae in favor of other genres.
Karl Young's Insistence on "A Certain Elegance"
That all-reggae concept survived internal pushback too. Co-founder Karl Young championed the idea after being struck, in his words, by a certain elegance to the format, and shut down colleagues who wanted to mix in other genres by simply declaring the matter settled, according to the Jamaica Observer's account of the station's founding. Young, who took on the project at an age when most people are winding down rather than starting new ventures, became the creative force behind the station's jingles and on-air identity, including the station's irreverent "Pinky and Jubby" characters.
From Skepticism to the People's Station
The gamble paid off quickly. By the end of 1990, artists, producers, and music administrators who had been largely ignored by the existing broadcasters embraced Irie FM for giving their records steady rotation, and the station built a large, loyal audience that made it, in the words of its own history, the people's number one station. That early relationship with reggae's working producers gave Irie FM a credibility with the genre's core audience that a more cautious, mixed-format launch would have struggled to earn.
