From Thriller to the Addams Family theme
Halloween Radio is part of iHeartMedia's lineup of commercial-free seasonal channels, and its playlist leans on the songs that have defined the holiday's sound for decades, from Michael Jackson's "Thriller" to the "Addams Family" theme, according to iHeart's own coverage of its Halloween programming. The station mixes in deeper cuts too, pairing Golden Earring's "Twilight Zone" and Rob Zombie's "Dragula" with the holiday standards, part of a wider family of themed iHeart channels that also includes Haunted House Radio and Ghost Stories Radio, according to iHeart's own guide to its spookiest soundtrack options.
The song that made Halloween a radio format
No single track did more to make Halloween its own radio genre than "Monster Mash." Bobby "Boris" Pickett wrote the novelty song around a Boris Karloff impression he had been doing in talent shows, released it on Gary S. Paxton's Garpax label in 1962, and watched it climb to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 just before Halloween that year, according to its entry on Wikipedia. The song charted again in 1973 and returned to the Hot 100 once more in 2021, a sixty-year run that turned a talent-show bit into the genre's anchor track and opened the door for the kind of all-season, commercial-free Halloween stations that followed.
