From 2WS to WSFM to Gold
The station traces back to 1978, launched to serve Sydney's Western Suburbs under the callsign 2WS, according to Wikipedia's history of the station. It converted to FM in 1993 and expanded into a Sydney-wide signal, shortening its name to WSFM in 2001 after Australian Radio Network bought it from Wesgo in 1994.
A Format Shift Forced by a Sister Station
WSFM ran as a classic hits station for years until 2014, when its sister station Mix 106.5 switched to a Top 40 format and rebranded as KIIS 106.5. That move left a gap in ARN's Sydney lineup, and WSFM shifted from classic hits to adult contemporary to fill it, part of a wider 2014 rebrand effort aimed at engaging Generation X listeners under the Gold network identity.
A 2025 Rebrand for a Slightly Younger Audience
WSFM fully rebranded as GOLD 101.7 in 2025, a move ARN described as bringing a fresh, unified identity to the national Gold network while shifting to target listeners aged 25 to 54 without abandoning the station's loyal older fan base, according to Radio Today's coverage of the rebrand. The new sound blends classic anthems from artists like INXS and Bon Jovi with contemporary hits from acts like P!nk and Bruno Mars, under the tagline "Just Great Songs."
