GlitterBeam began as an online-only station launched on July 14, 2019, by Eugenio Ceriello and Michael Dalzell, according to Wikipedia's history of the station. The idea from the start was to build a station around anthems rather than whatever happened to be sitting on the mainstream pop charts, giving LGBTQ+ listeners a dedicated home for the songs that actually soundtrack the community's own nights out.
From a Web Stream to Small-Scale DAB Across the UK
The station grew steadily beyond its original web-only footprint, expanding onto Ofcom's small-scale DAB trials and permanent local licenses in Cambridgeshire, Blackpool, York, Norfolk, Sheffield, Rotherham, Coventry, and Brighton. It also picked up full nationwide DAB coverage in Malta, giving a volunteer-run station launched by two people a genuinely wide terrestrial footprint across two countries within a few years.
An Italian Spinoff With Its Own Presenter Team
GlitterBeam Italia launched in 2024 as a dedicated Italian-language version of the network, staffed by its own team of Italian presenters rather than simply translating the UK feed. By March 2026, the Italian edition had joined its UK counterpart on Malta's DAB+ platform, extending GlitterBeam's reach even further across the Mediterranean.
More Than Just a Playlist
GlitterBeam's programming has stretched into advocacy and charity work alongside the music. The network ran special programming in support of Ukraine's LGBTQ+ community in 2022, and it hosts an annual "30 Hours for a Rainbow" charity radiothon that raises money for UK LGBTQ+ venues and organizations, all powered by a staff that, network-wide, remains entirely volunteer.
