Run entirely by volunteers since 2009
The station is operated by Gin Gin Community Broadcasters Inc, a volunteer group that has kept it on air 24 hours a day, seven days a week, since it began broadcasting in January 2009, according to the Bundaberg Regional Council's directory listing. In 2023, marking fourteen years on air, the group moved into a new studio inside the town's former Visitor Information Centre on Mulgrave Street, a step its treasurer described at the time as simply the next logical move for an organisation that had outgrown its old setup.
A sugar town that doubles in size every harvest
Gin Gin sits in a district that has run on sugar cane since the late 19th century. A government-built central mill began crushing cane nearby at Wallaville in 1896 and passed into cooperative ownership in 1927, according to Wikipedia's entry on the town. The harvest season, running from July to December, still roughly doubles Gin Gin's population as seasonal workers arrive, a rhythm the local station has broadcast through for over a decade.
