Licensed in 1992, Built on a Pirate Radio Legacy
Générations began as EFM Intergénération, formally authorized to broadcast on the Paris FM band by France's broadcasting regulator, the CSA, on June 15, 1992. That license came years after French hip-hop had already taken root, according to accounts of the genre's early years: Dee Nasty and DJ Kool Herc helped import the sound to France at the start of the 1980s, and for years it lived almost entirely on pirate radio stations before any licensed broadcaster was willing to give it real airtime.
From Counter-Culture to National Airwaves
Générations was part of the wave that changed that. The genre's mainstream turning point came in 1997, when Radio France itself launched Le Mouv', a national youth station that many initially dismissed as just another youth antenna, but which effectively confirmed that a music long relegated to the margins now belonged on serious national radio. Générations had already been building a dedicated urban-music audience in Paris for five years by that point, now owned by Espace Group and broadcasting across France rather than staying confined to its original FM license area.
