FunX Fissa is the nonstop party stream of NPO FunX, the Dutch public broadcaster's urban youth network, and even its name carries a backstory most listeners never think to ask about. "Fissa" is Dutch street slang for a party, and the word has traveled a genuinely long way to get there.

A Word That Crossed Two Oceans

According to Dutch language references, fissa entered Netherlands youth slang from Sranan Tongo, the Surinamese creole language, where "fesa" means celebration. Sranan Tongo itself borrowed the word from Portuguese festa, which traces back through Old Galician-Portuguese to Vulgar Latin festa. A word for celebration made its way from the Latin-speaking world to Portuguese colonial Suriname and then into Dutch street language in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, which is exactly the kind of cultural cross-pollination FunX built its whole identity around.

Born From Four City Stations

FunX itself launched nationally on August 3, 2002, growing out of a patchwork of local urban stations serving Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht. Those four city editions kept their own local programming even after a national edition launched on September 6, 2005, giving the network a structure that was genuinely regional before it was ever national. Stichting FunX has managed the station as part of Dutch public broadcasting since 2012, after the founding government subsidy model was phased out and the station moved into the NPO umbrella instead.

Music Built for the Street, Not the Charts

The wider FunX network was built to reflect Dutch cities as they actually sound, running R&B, hip-hop, Latin, reggae, dancehall, Arabpop, Turkpop and Bhangra alongside plenty of other crossover styles that rarely got airtime on mainstream Dutch radio when the station launched. FunX Fissa strips that mission down to its most direct form: an always-on stream built purely for the party, without the talk segments and city-specific programming that fill the main FunX schedule.

An Awards Show for the Scenes It Covers

FunX has backed up its programming with its own annual FunX Music Awards since 2015, recognizing artists working in the genres the station has championed since its earliest local broadcasts. The awards expanded in 2019 to add a dedicated category for female artists, a small but pointed acknowledgment of a scene that had grown well beyond what four city stations could have covered on their own back in 2002.

The Party Never Stops

From a word borrowed across two languages and an ocean to a stream that runs nothing but party music around the clock, FunX Fissa distills a two-decade-old network down to its purest form. It is proof that a station built to sound like the street can end up naming its playlist after the very slang that street produced.
