Slovakia's first private station, born in 1990
Fun Rádio holds a genuine claim to being Slovakia's oldest commercial radio station, going on air on June 10, 1990, according to the Slovak Wikipedia entry on the station. Founded by Pavol Rusko and Marián Vojtek as the country's very first private broadcaster, it launched just months after the Velvet Revolution ended decades of state control over Czechoslovak media, at a moment when independent radio in the region barely existed yet.
Four hours of its own, then a borrowed feed
The new station could not fill a full day of programming on its own at launch. Its earliest broadcasts ran just four hours a day, with the rest of the schedule filled by relaying French Fun Radio's own feed, the same network whose name the Slovak station adopted. That arrangement gradually gave way as Fun Rádio built out its own programming until it was broadcasting a full 24 hours a day under its own steam.
From Petržalka studios to the RTL Group
The station moved into new premises in Bratislava's Petržalka district in 1995, then joined the international RTL Group in 1998, tying Slovakia's oldest commercial broadcaster into one of Europe's largest radio and television networks. It added its own internet stream in 2002, well ahead of many peers in the region, and today operates under license holder RADIO, a.s., as part of the Radio Group under sole shareholder Boris Kollárik.
