Austria's Bilingual Alternative Radio Station

Listen Now

FM4 streams alternative rock and electronic music from Vienna in a mix of English and German, Austrian public broadcaster ORF's answer to listeners who wanted a station that treated indie and electronic scenes as the main event rather than a late-night afterthought. Roughly from the early morning into the early afternoon, the on-air language leans English, before afternoon shows switch over to German, a split few national broadcasters anywhere else attempt. It streams free worldwide on Radio Shuffle.

The station grew out of frustration, not corporate planning. A group of radio producers built FM4 in 1994 specifically to give Austria's growing alternative music scene an on-air home, and it launched on 16 January 1995 as an evening-and-night-only block riding on Blue Danube Radio, ORF's existing English-language station. For five years it stayed a part-time operation, filling hours Blue Danube wasn't using. That changed on 1 February 2000, when ORF merged the two stations outright and FM4 became a full 24-hour bilingual youth station in its own right, inheriting Blue Danube's English-language slot in the process.

That merger is still audible in FM4's schedule today: English-language shows like Reality Check and Update anchor the mornings, while German-language programs such as Connected and Homebase take over in the afternoon, with hosts and guests generally encouraged to speak their own first language rather than force a single house style. It is a format built on bilingual comfort rather than translation, which has helped FM4 pick up listeners well outside Austria's borders, particularly in nearby Bavaria.

The station has also built a real live-music footprint, launching the FM4 Frequency Festival with promoter Musicnet in 2001 and, by 2005, staging its first event outside Austria altogether, in Munich, carrying its alternative scene credibility from the airwaves onto an actual stage.
