Three Names Before It Found Its Sound
The station signed on as Capital Radio on July 20, 1989, Ireland's first Independent Local Radio contractor to go to air, managed by Mike Hogan under a consortium of Irish media and entertainment figures, according to Wikipedia's history of the station. It never found real traction under that name, consistently trailing rival 98FM, and a May 1991 relaunch as Rock 104 fared no better.
The 1992 Relaunch That Finally Worked
New CEO Dermot Hanrahan restructured the station again in late 1991, relaunching it in April 1992 as Dublin's FM104 under the tagline "Superstars of the 80s and 90s." That format change brought the financial stability the previous two identities never managed, and it set the stage for the station's eventual breakthrough against its longtime rival.
A Morning Show That Took the Station to Number One
FM104 did not overtake 98FM in the Dublin ratings until a 1995 programming shift introduced The Strawberry Alarm Clock, the station's weekday morning show, which proved popular enough to push FM104 to its first number-one position in the Dublin market by April 1996. The show has continued in various forms since, carrying the format that originally turned the station's fortunes around.
