Paris's Most Eclectic Music Radio Station

Listen Now

FIP plays jazz, French chanson, world music, pop-rock, blues, electronic music, classical pieces and film scores, often all inside the same hour, with no advertising and almost no talk breaking up the music. Programmers sequence more than 300 different tracks a day by ear, live, so a classical piece can lead straight into a rock song and somehow still feel like it belongs there. The station streams free worldwide on Radio Shuffle, no subscription or Radio France account required.

That format has barely changed since FIP first went on air in Paris on 5 January 1971, under the name France Inter Paris. It was created by Roland Dhordain, then head of radio and television at French public broadcasting, together with two France Inter producers, Jean Garetto and Pierre Codou. The station launched as a medium-wave opt-out from France Inter's own FM frequency, broadcasting on 514 metres, and other French cities later got their own local versions carrying the same music mixed with local traffic and events, each one swapping the P in FIP for a letter tied to its city.

One detail has stayed constant for over five decades: FIP has featured only female presenters since its founding, their voices announcing the next track in the brief gaps between songs and otherwise staying almost entirely out of the way. That restraint, combined with programming built on genuine musical curiosity rather than chart positions, has earned the station an unusually devoted following well beyond France. Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey has called it the best radio station in the world, and station staff have estimated that 80 to 90 percent of what FIP plays never gets airtime anywhere else.

The station still marks its own history on air. In early 2026, DJ and producer Laurent Garnier hosted an eight-hour special on FIP built around his 60th birthday, running through more than 80 tracks spanning 1966 to 2026, a tribute that doubled as a tour through exactly the kind of genre-blind curation FIP has built its reputation on since 1971.
