Broadcasting from the city that built its own jazz tradition
FIP Jazz streams out of a city with a genuine claim on the genre's European history. Paris students founded the Hot Club de France in the early 1930s to promote traditional jazz, swing and blues, and the club's own Quintette du Hot Club de France, built around guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stéphane Grappelli, took shape at the Hotel Claridge in Paris around 1934, according to a history of the Hot Club. Reinhardt had absorbed the sound of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Joe Venuti before helping invent gypsy jazz, a style built on a percussive rhythm guitar technique called "la pompe" that stands in for a drum kit entirely. That homegrown Parisian jazz scene gave the city an identity in the genre that long predates this channel.
