Born as Pirate Radio in Germany

Europe 1 launched on January 1, 1955, not in France but across the border in the Saarland, a step taken specifically to get around France's post-war ban on commercial broadcasting, according to Wikipedia's history of the station. For its first two years, under director Sebastian Kralik, a defector from Radio Luxembourg, Europe n°1 operated as an unauthorized pirate station, only becoming legally recognized in 1957 once French administrative control of the Saarland ended and the territory returned to West Germany.

The Station Behind Salut les Copains

Once established, Europe 1 pioneered a style of French radio built around eyewitness reporting and direct listener engagement, a departure from the more formal state broadcasting of the era. In the 1960s it launched Salut les copains, a show that became central to baby boom youth culture in France, alongside Pour ceux qui aiment le jazz, hosted by Daniel Filipacchi and Franck Ténot. During the political upheaval of May 1968, the station earned the nickname "barricade radio" for serving as an independent source of information as events unfolded, a role that drew later criticism from President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing over its tone.

From Music Pioneer to News and Talk

Mitterrand's 1981 legalization of private FM radio reshaped the French dial and chipped away at Europe 1's audience through the 1980s. By the 1990s the station had reinvented itself as a dedicated news and talk network, a format it still runs today, settling into position as roughly France's fifth most popular station.

A Recent Change of Ownership

In January 2022, media executive Vincent Bolloré acquired Europe 1, a deal that prompted employee strikes over concerns about editorial independence. Regulators have since warned the station about significantly overrepresenting far-right guests on air, a controversy that marks a sharp departure from the station's earlier reputation as an independent voice during moments like May 1968.

Why Tune In

Europe 1 carries seven decades of French broadcasting history, from a pirate signal beamed across the German border to one of the country's established news and talk networks. For listeners who want French news and current affairs with a station whose own story runs through some of the country's biggest political moments, it offers exactly that.
