A network that grew out of underground radio
Radio Eska traces its roots to the chaotic, hopeful years right after communism fell in Poland. Stations carrying the Eska name sprang up independently in Warsaw, Poznań and Wrocław between 1990 and 1993, several of them continuing the tradition of underground Solidarity-era broadcasting from the communist period, according to Wikipedia's history of the network. The three stations were brought together under ZPR Media Group in 1993, and the network kept expanding into local markets through the 1990s, adding stations such as Eska Nord in the Tricity area in 1994. Szczecin's own local frequency arrived via a similar path, with one academic account noting that an earlier Szczecin station, Radio Plama, closed after a few months, leaving the frequency to what is now Eska Szczecin.
A port city that throws its own music awards
Szczecin has hosted the Eska Music Awards gala at the Azoty Arena since 2014, giving the network's biggest annual event a home on the Oder river rather than in Warsaw. The city's waterfront itself doubles as a stage for much of the year, with outdoor concerts regularly held on the Wały Chrobrego terrace overlooking the river and port, a setting that makes the most of a city built around one of Europe's largest seaports.
