A Federation Older Than the League It Once Ran

EOK stands for Ελληνική Ομοσπονδία Καλαθοσφαίρισης, the Hellenic Basketball Federation, the sport's governing body in Greece since 1932 (Wikipedia). For decades EOK did more than just govern the sport; it directly ran the country's top professional league until the 1992-93 season, when that role passed to a new body, the Hellenic Basketball Association (HEBA), as the league turned fully professional. EOK remained the federation overseeing the national teams and the sport's development nationwide, with basket.gr as its digital home and EOK Web Radio as its live audio arm.

The Season That Turned Basketball Into a National Obsession

Greek basketball's rise to national prominence has a specific origin point. In 1987, the Greek national team, led by legendary guard Nikos Galis, won EuroBasket on home soil, a result widely credited with turning basketball into a sport the whole country suddenly cared about. That victory arrived just a few years before the professional league reorganization of 1992, and together the two moments set up the era that produced Greece's modern basketball identity: a country whose two Athens clubs, Olympiacos and Panathinaikos, would go on to combine for multiple EuroLeague titles and one of European sport's fiercest rivalries.

A Rivalry Built on Fire, Not Just Statistics

Panathinaikos, founded in 1919, has won seven EuroLeague titles across three different decades, while Olympiacos built its own continental pedigree with back-to-back EuroLeague finals against Panathinaikos in 1994 and 1995 before claiming its own championships. Coverage of the rivalry consistently points to something beyond the trophy count: commentators describe both clubs as leaning into "excitement and passion" because that is simply what their fans are about, a dynamic that has made Greek basketball commentary, radio included, as animated as the games themselves.

A Governing Body's Direct Line to the Fans

What makes EOK Web Radio distinct from a typical sports talk station is who runs it: not a private broadcaster chasing ratings, but the federation itself, speaking directly to the basketball public it oversees. That gives the station an institutional voice inside a basketball culture built around EuroBasket glory, a fierce Athens rivalry, and one of Europe's most consistently competitive domestic leagues.
