Decades later, Fania All-Stars co-founder Johnny Pacheco made it official, personally declaring Cali the world capital of salsa in recognition of just how completely the city had absorbed the genre.

What sets Cali apart from other salsa strongholds isn't just enthusiasm, it's originality. Dancers in the city's working-class neighborhoods developed a distinct style through the 1960s and 70s built around rapid footwork, sharp hip movement and acrobatic flourishes, a technique now studied and taught as its own tradition rather than a regional variation of someone else's steps.
