Broadcasting from Olancho's second city
Catacamas sits in Olancho, a department that has carried an outsized reputation within Honduras for most of its history. Olancho became a department in 1825 and grew wealthy on cattle ranching, wealth that also bought it outsized political influence and, at times, open conflict with the central government in Tegucigalpa, including an 1864 rebellion that left the department nearly depopulated after it was put down, according to a history of Olancho Department. The same region remained one of the country's most violent until as recently as 2012. Catacamas itself, the department's second city after capital Juticalpa, carries much older history too: nearby Talgua Cave, known as the Cave of the Glowing Skulls, holds burials radiocarbon-dated to roughly 900 BC, making the area a place of continuous human settlement for nearly three thousand years before this station ever went on air.
Part of a longer tradition of evangelical radio in Honduras
Encuentro Digital broadcasts into a country with a deep-rooted evangelical radio tradition. Honduras's best-known Christian station, HRVC, started in 1960 with just two hours of daily airtime from a hillside house above Tegucigalpa, running on a 1,000-watt transmitter and a wire antenna strung between two trees, according to a ministry profile of the station's history. HRVC later added its FM service, Stereo Luz, which began broadcasting Christian music around the clock in 1992 and grew into one of the country's most-listened-to stations, reaching roughly 80 percent of Honduras through a network of repeaters alongside internet and shortwave transmission. Encuentro Digital carries that same mission of gospel music and biblical teaching into Olancho specifically, serving a region whose own history has given its message of faith and hope particular weight.
