Born From an Oldies Station Called The Fox

El Zorro's frequency did not start out as a Latino station at all. The signal ran for years as "98.3 The Fox," an oldies format carried through Westwood One's Good Time Oldies network, before owner Arjuna Broadcasting flipped it to Spanish Tropical programming on November 5, 2020, according to RadioInsight's coverage of the switch. The new name kept a playful bit of continuity built in: El Zorro is Spanish for "the fox."

Filling a Gap Nobody Else Had

The flip made El Zorro the first Spanish-language radio station in the entire Utica market, a genuine first for the region rather than just another format tweak. Program director Joe Trisolino explained the company's thinking with a restaurant analogy: rather than running several stations with overlapping formats in one market, Arjuna looks for a segment of the audience without a station serving it and builds one, the same logic that led directly to El Zorro's launch alongside the company's existing Classic Rock outlet.

A Coverage Area That Grew, Then Pulled Back

El Zorro briefly expanded its reach by simulcasting on Rome's WKAL starting in April 2025, extending the Spanish-language format into a second market. That partnership lasted about a year before ending in May 2026, with WKAL shifting to a 70s-through-90s pop and rock format of its own under a new Magic 103.3 branding, according to CNYRadio's report on the change. El Zorro now broadcasts from its original home frequencies, WNRS 1420 AM and the 98.3 FM translator, serving Herkimer, Oneida, and Madison counties.

More Than a Playlist

Beyond the bachata, reggaeton, and salsa rotation, El Zorro runs local news, a community event calendar, and resources like a food pantry guide for the counties it covers, alongside a Community Relations Representative who translates English-language ads into Spanish for local businesses. That combination reflects the station's original mission: serving a Hispanic population in Central New York that had been growing rapidly with no dedicated station of its own before El Zorro arrived.
