Born in a Moscow suburb, then reinvented overnight

The band Дюна formed in 1987 in Dolgoprudny, a town just outside Moscow, under bassist and future frontman Viktor Rybin, originally playing hard rock with co-founder Sergei Katin, according to a biographical account of the group. A sharp stylistic turn followed within a year, pushing the band away from rock and toward the synth-driven, genre-blending pop sound that would define it, a sound later critics have described as a collision of Eurodance, funk bass lines, and the blatnyak and chanson traditions of Russian street song.

Absurdist hits that became folklore

That unlikely mix produced some of the most quoted novelty hits of Russian 1990s pop, including "Страна Лимония" (Limonia Land) and "Привет с большого бодуна" (Greetings From a Massive Hangover), tracks that outgrew the charts to become part of everyday Russian folk humor, still quoted decades later. Rybin remained the band's one constant through a lineup that, by some accounts, cycled through more than twenty musicians over the years, while the material itself only grew more embedded in popular culture.

A frontman who stepped back, then came back

By 1999, Rybin was telling the Moscow newspaper MK that Дюна could no longer function as a commercial act under the conditions of the time, and he turned his attention to a side project called RVSN with his wife Natalia Senchukova. The band's story did not end there. Дюна marked its 35th anniversary in 2022 with a full concert in Moscow, proof that the catalog this radio station is built around still draws a crowd.
