Grown from a regional station into a 22-city network
Coast is owned and operated by New Zealand Media and Entertainment, with its roots tracing back to a local Hawke's Bay station in 2002 before the network expanded nationally, officially taking to the air under the Coast name on April 26, 2004. From that regional starting point, the network grew into stations across 22 major cities and provincial centres, run out of central Auckland studios while still reaching listeners in far smaller markets than the country's biggest urban centres.
A format built on nostalgia, not novelty
The station's entire identity rests on familiarity. Rather than chasing new releases, Coast's classic hits format leans on songs most New Zealand listeners already know by heart, pop and rock anthems from the 1970s and 1980s layered with the occasional new wave favorite. That approach gives the network a built-in audience: listeners who want the comfort of a known song over the discovery of an unfamiliar one, a format strategy shared by classic hits stations worldwide but delivered here with a distinctly New Zealand playlist and on-air identity.
