The Classical Half of Johannesburg's Hot 1027

Listen Now

Classic1027 streams classical music live from Johannesburg, South Africa, the surviving classical half of a station that spent nearly a quarter century as the city's dedicated classical broadcaster, and you can hear it free on Radio Shuffle from anywhere in the world.

Nearly 25 Years as Johannesburg's Classical Station

The station traces back to 1997, when Classic FM launched on 102.7 MHz in Johannesburg as a dedicated classical music broadcaster, according to Wikipedia's history of the station. For more than two decades it held that single-genre identity, becoming one of South Africa's best known classical outlets before running into serious financial trouble.

Business Rescue and a New Owner

In October 2019, the station entered business rescue proceedings and cut staff as it worked through financial difficulties. The Professional Consortium, a group of media and business specialists, successfully bid to take over the struggling broadcaster, keeping the frequency alive through a period that could easily have ended it entirely.

A License That Mandates Both Formats

The rescue came with a condition. When South Africa's broadcasting regulator, ICASA, approved a license amendment on April 30, 2021, it did not let the new owners drop classical music altogether. The station relaunched as Hot 1027 on July 1, 2021, under a license that specifically requires a 50-50 split between old-school and R&B programming and classical music, according to Wikipedia. In practice, that means daytime hours from 5am to 7pm carry old-school and R&B, while evenings and overnight return to the classical format the station built its name on.

The Stream That Carries the Old Name Forward

That regulatory split is exactly why a station called Classic1027 still exists as its own stream today, even though the FM dial now identifies as Hot 1027. The feed carries the license's mandated classical block, labeled Hot-Classic in the streaming platform's own listings, giving listeners a dedicated way to hear just the classical half of a station legally required to split its identity in two.

Why Tune In

Classic1027 is what remains of a station most Johannesburg listeners assumed had disappeared when Hot 1027 took over the airwaves. For anyone who wants classical music from South Africa without waking up at 5am to catch it before the format switches, this stream gives direct access to the half of the license that never stopped being classical.
