A College Station Before It Was Classic Hits
WJJK's story starts in an unlikely place for a station that now plays radio staples. It signed on September 25, 1950, as WAJC, with the call letters standing for Arthur Jordan College of Music, and it was a non-commercial college station on 91.3 MHz, according to Wikipedia's history of WJJK. It moved to 104.5 in 1956 as the radio station of Butler University in Indianapolis.
From Campus Radio to Commercial Dial
Butler University decided in 1993 to discontinue its radio station, and the 104.5 frequency was sold to Susquehanna Radio Corporation, which turned it into a commercial operation. What followed was a run of new identities. The station carried the calls WGRL as a country outlet, then became WGLD in 1997 when it flipped to oldies as Gold 104.5.
The Jack Years, Then Classic Hits
On March 13, 2005, the calls changed to WJJK and the station adopted the nationally syndicated Jack FM adult hits format, which promised a wide-ranging playlist with a lot of variety and little chatter. By September 2006 it had settled into classic hits, and the Jack name was dropped in December 2007, leaving the Classic Hits 104.5 WJJK identity it uses now.
Part of Cumulus in Indianapolis
The station is owned by Cumulus Media and shares ownership with sister stations WFMS, WNDX, WNTR, WXNT and WZPL. Its own station listing bills it as Indy's only classic hits station, a good summary of the lane it occupies in the market: familiar songs, mostly from the 70s, 80s and 90s, without the news and talk of a heritage AM station.
