Born from a station split
Classic 21 launched on 1 April 2004 when RTBF retired Radio 21, its rock and pop station running since the early 1980s, and split the format in two, according to Wikipedia's history of the station. Classic 21 kept the classic rock identity while a sister station, Pure FM, took over the more contemporary programming, a clean division that let RTBF serve two different rock audiences with two dedicated signals instead of one station trying to cover both eras at once.
A drummer's two decades at the helm
Marc Ysaye, a musician who had played drums with the bands Machiavel and Burning Plague before moving behind the microphone, ran Classic 21 from its creation until his final broadcast in December 2022, giving the station nearly two decades under a presenter who came to radio from inside a band rather than from a programming department. Based in Mons, the station held its classic rock identity exclusively until 2008, when it broadened toward adult contemporary and pop while keeping its core English-language rock catalog intact for listeners across Wallonia and Brussels.
One signal, many spinoffs
Classic 21's audience appetite for deep catalog rock has since spun off a wide family of digital-only channels covering specific decades and subgenres, from 80s new wave to metal, blues and soul power, each one narrowing the parent station's broad rock identity down to a single lane. The main Classic 21 signal remains the foundation all of those offshoots draw from, a station still built on the same English-language rock mix it launched with in 2004.
