A softer alternative born in Paris
Chérie FM was created in 1987 by Jean-Paul Baudecroux, who built the station around a Paris frequency bought from Gilda la Radiopolitaine, according to a history of the station compiled by SchooP's French radio archive. From the start it was positioned as a gentler alternative to Baudecroux's own NRJ, aimed squarely at an adult female audience rather than NRJ's younger crowd. The station went national in 1989 after NRJ Group acquired the Pacific FM frequencies needed to expand its reach across France.
Reaching French Guiana more than two decades later
Chérie FM did not arrive in French Guiana until April 2009, more than twenty years after its Paris launch, extending the brand's soft pop and rock format to French-speaking listeners on the South American coast.
Broadcasting next to Europe's spaceport
French Guiana gives the station an unusually striking backdrop. The territory is home to the Guiana Space Centre near Kourou, Europe's primary spaceport, which drives roughly 15 percent of French Guiana's GDP and has drawn engineers and technicians from across Europe into a region already shaped by African, South American, indigenous, and Creole communities. Chérie FM Guyane broadcasts into that same multicultural mix, a French pop station reaching listeners in a rainforest territory that also launches European rockets.
