On air since the final day of 1993
Capital FM first went on air on December 31, 1993, broadcasting from Kampala on 91.3 MHz during a formative period for Uganda's FM radio landscape. Over three decades the station expanded well beyond its original signal, adding frequencies in Mbale, Gulu, Fort Portal, and Mbarara that, combined with its Kampala reach, made it the most listened to radio station in Uganda according to its own station history.
A launchpad for Ugandan broadcasting talent
Capital FM's studios have served as a training ground for some of Uganda's best known broadcasters and entertainers, including presenters Gaetano Kagwa, Flavia Tumusiime, and Joy Doreen Biira, alongside Ugandan singer Juliana Kanyomozi, who worked as a presenter there before her music career took off nationally. That pipeline of talent has helped keep signature shows like the Big Breakfast Show and the long-running listener jackpot feature The Brain Game part of Ugandan radio culture for years.
New ownership in 2026
Businessman Kin Kariisa's Next Media Services acquired Capital FM in 2026, adding it to a stable that includes sister stations Beat FM Uganda and Kiis FM Uganda, extending Next Media's reach across multiple formats in the Ugandan radio market.
