Launched With a Dance Anthem in 1999
The station signed on as Galaxy 105-106 on June 1, 1999, opened by presenter Steve Furnell with "What You Need" by Powerhouse as the very first track played, a dance anthem that set the tone for a station built around a younger, club-leaning audience from day one.
From Galaxy to Capital
The station became Galaxy North East in 2006 to match branding across Global's wider Galaxy network, then rebranded again as Capital North East on January 3, 2011, following the merger of Global's Galaxy and Hit Music networks into the modern Capital FM identity. It moved out of its original Wallsend base at Silverlink Business Park in May 2015, relocating to Wellbar Central in Newcastle city centre.
A Breakfast Show That Launched a Reality TV Star
Steve Furnell and Karen Wight anchored the station's breakfast show for well over a decade before departing for rival stations in 2012. Later presenters included Scarlett Moffatt, who went on to become a reality television star through Gogglebox and I'm a Celebrity, alongside Hannah Gray, carrying the morning show through its next era.
