Capital FM Glasgow streams today's biggest pop and chart hits across Scotland's Central Belt, with local programming produced from Global's Glasgow studios on weekdays and weekends. You can stream it free right now on Radio Shuffle, wherever you are in the world.
Launched by Nightclub Promoters, Not Broadcasters
This station's roots trace back to Glasgow's club scene rather than traditional radio. The Big Beat Group, run by Glasgow nightclub promoters, launched it as Beat 106 on November 19, 1999, a rock and dance station fronted by presenters Graham Stewart and Jim Gellatly, according to Wikipedia's history of the station. Capital Radio Group bought the fledgling station just eight months later, in July 2000, pulling it into the national commercial radio industry almost as soon as it found its footing.
Four Rebrands in Twelve Years
Few British stations have changed names as often as this one. A 2005 merger that created GCap Media led to Beat 106 closing on January 1, 2006, replaced the next day by XFM Scotland under launch presenter Dominik Diamond. When XFM's audience numbers fell, Global Radio rebranded it again as Galaxy Scotland in 2008, networking programming from Leeds alongside local breakfast and drivetime shows. The station settled into its current identity on January 3, 2011, when Global folded its Galaxy and Hit Music networks into the nine-station Capital network, moving most networked programming to London in the process.
Local Programming That Came and Went, and Came Back
Capital Scotland's local identity hasn't stayed fixed even under one name. In 2019, national networked programming replaced the station's local breakfast and weekend shows, before local programming returned again in 2023. Today, Global's Glasgow studios produce local shows from 6am to 7pm on weekdays and 9am to noon on weekends, broadcasting on 105.7 FM from Craigkelly and 106.1 FM from Black Hill to reach Glasgow, Edinburgh and the wider Central Belt.
Tune In
