One channel inside a Toronto meditation network
Calm Radio launched in 2009 as a side project of Toronto musician and composer Eric Harry, who built it to share his own solo piano and meditation recordings at a time when Pandora dominated internet radio. The service grew into a sprawling catalogue that now counts more than 800 channels spanning classical music, nature sounds, sleep music and meditation, and in 2021 it was acquired by the Montreal broadcaster Stingray Group, which still runs it as a dedicated subsidiary with Harry remaining involved as general manager.
Chants and singing bowls from the Himalayas
The Tibet channel narrows that catalogue down to music rooted in Tibetan Buddhist tradition, including recorded chanting credited to the Gyume Tibetan monks, the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa and the monks of Drepung Loseling monastery. Singing bowls, the instrument most associated with this style, are traditionally linked to Buddhist and Hindu monasteries across Tibet, Nepal and India, where monks have used them for centuries in meditation and ceremony. The sound has since become a staple of modern meditation practice, and a peer-reviewed study published on PMC found that a brief singing bowl meditation session reduced feelings of tension and anxiety among participants, though the researchers noted that larger studies are needed to confirm any longer-term effect.
