Café del Mar streams chillout and lounge music free on Radio Shuffle, carrying the name of the Ibiza bar that is widely credited with inventing the genre as a commercial category. What began as ambient background music for watching the sun go down has grown into a globally recognized sound, a record label and now a 24-hour streaming station.
A Sunset Bar That Became a Genre
Café del Mar opened on June 20, 1980, in Sant Antoni de Portmany on the western coast of Ibiza, its look shaped by architect Lluís Güell, according to the venue's history. For its first decade it was simply a bar with an unusually good view, until staff began playing ambient music during sunset hours in the late 1980s and customers started asking where they could buy copies. The bar sold cassette tapes at first, a low-key response to demand that eventually turned into something much bigger.
José Padilla's Sunset Sets
The sound Café del Mar became known for took real shape in 1991, when DJ José Padilla began playing regular sunset sets at the bar, blending ambient electronics, film scores and world music over gentle house rhythms into what the Balearic scene would eventually just call chillout. In 1994, the bar hired Padilla to assemble those sounds into a compilation album, released on the React Music label, and the first five volumes of the Café del Mar series, released through 1999, effectively defined the genre for a global audience who had never set foot on the island.
From a Cassette Table to Its Own Record Label
By 1999 the demand had outgrown any outside label's capacity to keep up, so Café del Mar launched its own imprint, Café del Mar Music. The label has since released more than twenty core compilation albums alongside a long run of best-of and remix collections, building a catalogue that turned a single bar's sunset playlist into one of the most recognizable brand names in chillout and lounge music anywhere in the world.
Padilla's Legacy and a 24/7 Stream
José Padilla died on October 22, 2020, after a battle with colon cancer, closing the chapter on the DJ most responsible for the sound the brand still trades on. Just weeks earlier, on September 28, 2020, Café del Mar had launched a live 24/7 stream, giving listeners everywhere continuous access to the same chillout sound Padilla spent three decades curating from a terrace on the Mediterranean, now available any hour of the day, far from Ibiza's actual sunset.
