The City That Bananas Built
Machala carries the nickname "World Banana Capital" for good reason. The city ships bananas out through nearby Puerto Bolívar to markets around the globe, and the surrounding province has ridden that trade since a banana boom took off in 1945, generating wealth for growers and drawing hundreds of families into the region. Ecuador has held the title of the world's leading banana exporter since 1964, moving more than 357 million crates of the fruit, and Machala sits at the center of that entire supply chain.
A Province Once Invaded, Then Rebuilt on Fruit
El Oro's history has not been uneventful. Ecuador granted Machala provincial capital status on 23 April 1884, creating El Oro province at that point, but the region was invaded by the Peruvian army in 1941 and occupied for several months until the Rio de Janeiro Protocol settled the border dispute in 1942. The banana economy that followed a few years later helped rebuild the province into the agricultural and commercial hub it is today, adding shrimp, rice, coffee and cacao to its export mix along the way.
A Beauty Pageant for Bananas
Machala's relationship with its signature crop shows up most vividly every September, when the city hosts the Feria Mundial del Banano from the 19th through the 25th. The festival centers on the Reina Mundial del Banano, an international beauty pageant held in Machala since 1985 and open only to candidates from banana-producing countries, alongside a companion competition called Rey Banano where growers submit their best bunches for a technical jury to judge. Parades, agricultural exhibits and banana-based food tastings round out a week built entirely around civic pride in a single fruit.
A Station Rooted in Its Region's Biggest Export
Brisa Azul FM's variety format and multi-province reach make more sense once the backdrop is clear: a station serving southern coastal Ecuador from a city whose economy, festivals and international reputation all trace back to the same crop moving through the same port a few minutes from the studio.
