Bremen Zwei streams culture, information, and a wide-ranging music selection live from Germany's smallest federal state, broadcast by the country's smallest public broadcaster. You can stream it free anytime on Radio Shuffle.
Broadcasting Since the 1920s, Officially Since 1945
Bremen Zwei sits inside one of the oldest broadcasting lineages in Germany. Radio in Bremen dates back to November 30, 1924, when a relay transmitter called the "Zwischensender" began distributing programming from Hamburg's NORAG network for three to four hours a day. After the Second World War, Radio Bremen restarted daily AM broadcasting on December 23, 1945, under Allied occupation, and in 1949 it was formally chartered as the public broadcaster for the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. The following year, it became a founding member of ARD, Germany's consortium of public broadcasters, despite being by far the smallest regional broadcaster in the group.
Bremen Zwei itself, as a distinct channel, has a more recent identity. It replaced an earlier station called Nordwestradio on August 12, 2017, taking on a culture and information format comparable to Bavaria's well-known Bayern 2.
A Small Broadcaster With an Outsized Cultural Role
Being Germany's smallest public broadcaster has not stopped Radio Bremen from running a full-service culture channel. Bremen Zwei carries arts coverage, literature discussion, current affairs, and a music selection broader than typical hit radio, giving one of Germany's smallest states a radio voice with the same cultural ambitions as its much larger ARD siblings.
That punch-above-its-weight approach is part of what makes Radio Bremen notable within German public broadcasting: a tiny city-state broadcaster maintaining the full range of programming, news, culture, and youth-focused channels, that bigger regional broadcasters need much larger budgets to sustain.
What You'll Actually Hear
Expect cultural programming, literature and arts discussion, current affairs coverage, and a music selection that ranges well beyond typical pop radio, all delivered with the editorial seriousness of a public broadcaster punching above its size.
Bremen Zwei is free to stream on Radio Shuffle alongside thousands of other stations from around the world. Press play for culture radio from Germany's smallest state.
