A Soundtrack for Japan's Bubble-Era Boom

City pop grew out of what Japan once called "New Music," a wave of Western-influenced songwriting that absorbed funk, AOR, soft rock and disco into something distinctly Japanese, according to Wikipedia's history of the genre. The sound hit its commercial peak in the early 1980s alongside Japan's bubble economy, when albums like Tatsuro Yamashita's "For You" and Mariya Takeuchi's "Variety" captured a newly affluent, cosmopolitan audience with lavish studio production and lyrics about driving at night, beach weekends and city lights.

Forgotten at Home, Then Found by an Algorithm

City pop fell out of fashion in Japan through the 1990s, dismissed by younger listeners as music for a bubble economy that had already burst. Its second life began almost by accident: a 2017 fan upload of Mariya Takeuchi's 1984 track "Plastic Love" started surfacing repeatedly in YouTube recommendations, and nobody has fully explained why the algorithm latched onto it, according to Wikipedia's account of the song's revival. The clip pulled in tens of millions of views before a copyright strike took it down, by which point "Plastic Love" had become the entry point for a new generation discovering city pop through vaporwave and future funk playlists rather than record store crates.

A Global Stream Built on a Niche Catalog

BOX Japan City Pop runs as one channel inside the wider BOX Radio network, an app built around dozens of narrowly focused genre streams rather than a single mixed format. That structure lets a sound as specific as city pop get its own dedicated 24 hour feed instead of fighting for space against other Japanese pop styles, pulling from both the genre's 1980s originators and the contemporary artists keeping the style alive for listeners who found it decades after it first charted.
