A New Voice on the Budapest Dial in 2019

Best FM Budapest came on air in September 2019 on 99.5 MHz, a frequency that had previously belonged to Magyar FM, as Media1's report on the launch records. The licence had been won earlier that year by Media Depo Kft. under the working name City Radio, and the name changed before launch. Its music leans on the 1990s and 2000s, aimed at listeners who grew up with those songs.

A Network That Began in Debrecen

The Budapest station is the capital's outpost of a bigger story. According to the Hungarian Wikipedia entry on Best FM, the brand began as a local Debrecen station in December 1998 under the name Radio FM95, and was renamed Best FM in December 2012. A Nyiregyhaza station followed in 2018, and in 2019 Budapest, Szekesfehervar, Eger and Zalaegerszeg joined. By April 2021 the Budapest, Szekesfehervar, Zalaegerszeg and Eger stations were carrying central programming from the Budapest studio.

The Best Songs, Every Day

The network describes itself as "A legjobb zenek," the best songs, and the Budapest schedule mixes hit music with news and entertainment features. The station's website lists presenters including Makszem Levente, Whiteboy, Bikfalvi Tomi, Majoros Rita and Horvath Zoltan, and it often marks anniversaries of well-known songs and artists across several decades.

Connections Across Hungarian Radio

Media1 noted that the launch was promoted by Bazsa Peter, music director of Radio 1, and that program director Bertok Laszlo, who also runs the production company behind Radio 1 and Retro Radio programmes, was involved. That closeness between Best FM and other Budapest stations suggests a shared pool of radio talent rather than a rivalry.
