Bel RTL first went on air in 1991, and the setting could not have been less like a typical broadcast facility. The station launched from Villa Empain, the landmark Art Deco mansion on Boulevard Franklin Roosevelt in Brussels, a genuinely unusual home for a commercial radio startup. According to reporting on the station's history, Bel RTL became the top station in the French-speaking radio landscape remarkably fast, overtaking RTBF's public stations, which had been considered untouchable up to that point.

Bel RTL has not relinquished that lead since. Recent CIM ratings for January through April 2026 put RTL Belgium, the company behind Bel RTL, in first place among 18 to 54 year old listeners with 32.6 percent market share, confirming a run of dominance the station has held for the better part of its existence. The station marked its 30th anniversary with retrospectives calling it a genuine "success story" of Belgian commercial radio, a rare case of a station holding the top spot for so long without serious interruption.
Ownership has shifted over the years, with DPG Media and Groupe Rossel each taking a 50 percent stake in RTL Belgium as of March 2022, but the station's on-air identity and its lead in the ratings have stayed consistent through that transition.
