Bayern 1 Niederbayern/Oberpfalz broadcasts a mix of 70s, 80s, 90s, and 00s hits paired with regional news from Lower Bavaria and the Upper Palatinate, two of the five editorial regions that make up Bavaria's flagship regional network. You can stream it free anytime on Radio Shuffle.
Bavaria's Original Radio Voice
Bayern 1 traces its roots back to the earliest days of postwar German broadcasting. The program first went on air on January 31, 1948, as the full-service radio offering of what would soon become Bayerischer Rundfunk, Bavaria's public broadcaster, officially chartered on January 25, 1949. For its first 26 years the program carried a different name, only becoming "Bayern 1" during a station-wide reform on January 1, 1974, that gave each BR service the numbered branding still used today.
That history makes Bayern 1 one of the oldest continuously running radio programs in Germany, predating the formal founding of the broadcaster that carries it.
Built Region by Region
What sets Bayern 1 apart from most national or statewide stations is its structure. Rather than one signal for the entire state, Bayern 1 splits its broadcast day across five regional editorial offices: Upper Bavaria, Lower Bavaria/Upper Palatinate, Franconia, Main Franconia, and Swabia, each producing its own local news and a dedicated regional magazine hour between noon and one o'clock. Niederbayern/Oberpfalz, Lower Bavaria and the Upper Palatinate, is one of those five regions, giving listeners there news and features specific to their corner of the state rather than a one-size-fits-all statewide feed.
That regional structure went even further in the digital realm. Starting in May 2018, the Niederbayern-Oberpfalz network was split by administrative district for DAB+ digital broadcasting, letting local private stations launch their own dedicated digital channels across Lower Bavaria and the Upper Palatinate from July 2018 onward, a sign of how much importance Bavarian broadcasting places on genuinely local coverage.
What You'll Actually Hear
Expect a steady run of 70s, 80s, 90s, and 00s hits built for easy, nostalgic listening, interrupted on schedule by regional news and the midday magazine hour covering Lower Bavaria and the Upper Palatinate specifically. It is comfort radio with a genuine local backbone.
